Après trois premiers albums exceptionnels, difficile pour Massive Attack de donner une suite à un début de carrière aussi brillant. D’autant que les cinq années qui séparent 100th Window de son prédécesseur Mezzanine ont été mouvementées. En désaccord quant à l’évolution artistique du groupe, Mushroom a claqué la porte en 1999, privant Massive Attack de son pôle hip hop / soul. Daddy G s’est quant à lui mis en congé le temps de cet album, laissant désormais Robert Del Naja, alias 3D, seul aux commandes. Ces absences se font hélas sentir sur 100th Window, auquel il manque l’audace et la sensualité de Blue Lines, Protection et Mezzanine.
Reprenant l’atmosphère sombre et inquiétante de Mezzanine, 100th Window peine pourtant à en égaler l’intensité. On a parfois l’impression de se perdre dans un épais brouillard de nappes de synthétiseurs, pas toujours convaincu par les voix qui tentent de le percer. Présente sur trois morceaux – « What Your Soul Sings », « Special Cases » et « A Prayer For England », Sinead O’Connor déçoit en effet, moins touchante que celles qui l’ont précédée, Shara Nelson, Tracey Thorn, Nicolette et Elizabeth Fraser. Chanteur attitré de Massive Attack depuis Blue Lines, Horace Andy livre une prestation honorable ; on l’imagine pourtant regrettant les terres ensoleillées de la Jamaïque, la température de 100th Window frôlant parfois le zéro.
