Das Saxophon: die Tenorsaxophonisten, die den Ton angeben

Wie wurde das Saxophon – ursprünglich von einem Belgier für Militärkapellen erfunden – zum Sinnbild einer Musikrichtung? Wie haben sich die Jazzmusiker die Erfindung von Adolphe Sax angeeignet? Erster Teil einer Serie über große Saxophonisten, die – Ehre, wem Ehre gebührt – mit dem Tenorsaxophon und seinen zahlreichen Anhängern von Coleman Hawkins bis Wayne Shorter beginnt.

Bis heute konnte kein Saxophonist dem Einfluss dieser Titanen entgehen. Trotzdem gab es unter ihren Zeitgenossen viele, die sich durch ihre persönlichen Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten und ihren ganz eigenen Sound Gehör verschafften und eine eigene Identität gefunden haben. Aus der Generation des Hardbop, die dem Bebop die Ausdrucksstärke des Blues und des frühen Gospels zurückgibt, ließen Hank Mobley mit seiner introvertierten Lyrik, Benny Golson mit seinem warmen Klang und Harold Land mit seinen ausdrucksvollen Phrasierungen jeweils ein ganz eigenes Temperament erkennen und unterschieden sich in Timbre und Intonation voneinander. Sie waren nicht die einzigen Musiker, die in den Combos von Art Blakey, Horace Silver und Max Roach unter den Etiketten der Labels Blue Note oder Riverside glänzten. Der besonders flinke und weitschweifige Johnny Griffin zeichnete sich neben Thelonious Monk aus, bevor er in Europa Karriere machte, wie auch Charlie Rouse, der seine musikalische Karriere hauptsächlich im Quartett des Pianisten verbrachte. Von einer sinnlichen Überschwänglichkeit, pflegte Stanley Turrentine die zarte Seite des häufig virilen und schneidenden Tenorsaxophons, während sich George Coleman, der Nachfolger von Coltrane bei Miles Davis, durch seinen präzisen Sinn für Melodik einen Namen machte. Wieder andere Musiker fielen durch die Vielfalt der Instrumente auf, die sie neben dem Tenorsaxophon verwendeten, wie etwa Yusef Lateef, der zahlreiche ethnische Flöten, Oboe oder auch Englischhorn spielte und so den Jazz für Klänge aus der ganzen Welt öffnete, oder der phänomenale Roland Kirk, der sich neben dem Tenorsaxophon zweier anderer Saxophonmodelle, die nicht mehr gespielt wurden, annahm: Manzello (vom Sopransaxophon abgeleitet) und Stritch (ein Altsaxophon in gerader Bauweise), die er beide gleichzeitig spielte und damit, jenseits der augenscheinlichen Burleske, seinen Traum von polyphonen Klängen verwirklichte.

Zahlreiche Saxophonisten haben die Perspektiven genutzt, die John Coltrane gegen Ende seines Lebens eröffnet hat, wie etwa seine Schüler Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp und Albert Ayler, die die Suche ihres Mentors zum absoluten Höhepunkt geführt haben, in einer Ästhetik des Schreis, profan und militant bei Shepp, mystisch bis zur Erleuchtung bei Sanders und Ayler, im Einklang mit einer Zeit und mit einer Gruppe von Menschen, die nach neuen Horizonten strebten. Dagegen sind Charles Lloyd und Sam Rivers weniger radikal und führen, der eine durch Sanglichkeit, der andere durch formelle Abstraktion, beide Seiten des Coltrane’schen Erbes weiter.

Zu ihrer Zeit diskreter und verhaltener im Ausdruck, aber für die Nachwelt entscheidend, haben die Stimmen von Wayne Shorter und Joe Henderson durch die Alternativen, die beide angesichts der Coltrane’schen Allgegenwart entwickeln konnten, allmählich ihre Modernität ganz ans Licht gebracht, in der Ausformung ihres Klanges wie in der Ausarbeitung der Phrasierung, und auch dank echten kompositorischen Talents, das ihrer Inspiration diente. Abschließend noch ein Musiker, der zu seinen Lebzeiten nur kleinen Kreisen bekannt war, zur Schule des Pianisten Lennie Tristano gehörte und dem Altsaxophonisten Lee Konitz nahestand: Warne Marsh ist posthum zu erstaunlicher Bekanntheit gelangt, insbesondere durch seinen Einfluss auf Mark Turner. Sein Spiel ist berühmt für die fließenden und luftigen Melodielinien ohne jegliche grelle Effekte. Es ist von einer Schlichtheit, die im Kontrast steht zu der manchmal ausufernden Weitschweifigkeit, die oft mit dem Tenorsaxophon in Verbindung gebracht wird. Ein Beweis dafür, dass wir die große Vielseitigkeit dieses Instrumentes mit tausend verschiedenen Facetten noch lange nicht ausgeschöpft haben.
