The Watson Twins

Twin sisters Chandra Watson and Leigh Watson’s music crosses the divide between country traditions and contemporary roots music. Born in Kentucky, the Watson Twins relocated to Los Angeles in the early aughts. They got a significant career boost when they appeared on Jenny Lewis' 2006 solo debut. After signing with Vanguard, they released their first full-length album, Fire Songs, in 2008, with Talking to You, Talking to Me appearing two years later. The sisters moved to Nashville in 2014 and continued to hone their sibling harmonies on Americana and indie folk-leaning efforts like DUO (2018) and Holler (2023). Born and raised in Louisville, the Watson Twins began to sing as young girls, following their mother's example, who would croon along with her favorite tunes around the house. In 1998, Chandra and Leigh pulled up stakes and moved to Los Angeles in hopes of making a career in music. They spent several years as backup singers with a popular local band and became fixtures on the music scene in Silverlake, where they performed with acts such as Orphan Train, Joe Firstman, and Rilo Kiley. The Watson Twins also began writing their own material and arranging the work of others to suit their unique harmonies, occasionally playing shows under the name "Black Swan." Already well-known in L.A., the Watson Twins got a significant career boost when Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis invited the girls to sing harmonies on her solo debut. The result, 2006's Rabbit Fur Coat, was a major indie success that drew nearly as much attention to the Watson Twins as it did to Lewis. The sisters followed up such success with a recording of their own, Southern Manners, a self-released eight-song EP that gave Chandra and Leigh greater room to explore their perspective on rural American music. The recording did well during the group's tour, where they sold out major venues in Southern California and traveled the country as a headliner and opening act for Magnolia Electric Co. After signing with Vanguard Records, the Watson Twins released their first full-length album, Fire Songs, in 2008. The following year they contributed a cover of the Cure's "Just Like Heaven" to the soundtrack album for the HBO TV series True Blood, and in 2010 they released their sophomore long-player, Talking to You, Talking to Me. 2011's Night Covers EP saw the Twins apply their Laurel Canyon country esthetic to songs by Sade, the Black Keys, and Bill Withers, while 2013's full-length Pioneer Lane delivered a set of original family-oriented folk songs produced by Russ Pollard. The duo returned to the South in 2014, putting down roots in Nashville and working on new material while continuing to provide backing vocals for a wide array of artists, including Kings of Leon, the Shins, Orville Peck, Shooter Jennings, Billy Bragg, and Willie Nelson. 2018's DUO saw the Twins working again with Russ Pollard, co-writing all the songs and singing the parts in unison, resulting in a distinctive-sounding collection of originals performed in a singular voice. The honky tonk-inspired "Two Timin" appeared in early 2023. Produced by and featuring Butch Walker, the single appeared on the energetic full-length effort Holler, recorded live in the studio.
