Seraphic Fire

South Florida's Seraphic Fire is one of the leading vocal ensembles in the U.S., with a varied repertory extending from Hildegard of Bingen to contemporary music and encompassing popular genres as well as traditional concert works. The group's work also has a strong educational component. Seraphic Fire was formed in Miami in 2002 by Patrick Dupré Quigley, who remains its artistic director. The choir quickly gained attention beyond South Florida, performing a regular season that includes concerts in the Miami area and beyond. The group has toured widely and has developed ongoing collaborations with the Cleveland Orchestra and the New World Symphony, among others. Seraphic Fire has a large repertory that includes Gregorian Chant and monophony by Hildegard of Bingen, traditional monuments of Baroque choral music, Romantic works of Brahms and Mahler, and new music, often commissioned specifically for the group. The choir has also served as a resident ensemble at the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado, where Quigley often teaches and performs as a conductor. Seraphic Fire has been especially visible nationally and internationally through its series of some 15 recordings, all of which have appeared on the group's Seraphic Fire Media label (distributed by Naxos). The series began in 2005 with the release Beginnings and continued two years later with Amazing Grace: A Gospel & Bluegrass Journey, one of several releases where the choir has offered popular and vernacular genres. In addition to concertizing, Seraphic Fire has been unusually dedicated to educational activities, collaborating in this regard with the Miami-Dade County Public Schools (where the group has emphasized work with underserved elementary school students), the Herb Alpert School of Music at the University of California at Los Angeles, and the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. Several of the group's recordings have made the top ten on Billboard magazine's Traditional Classical album sales chart, and Seraphic Fire garnered two Grammy Award nominations in 2012 for the albums Brahms: Ein deutsches Requiem, Op. 45, and A Seraphic Choir Christmas. Seraphic Fire released the album Hildegard von Bingen: Ordo Virtutum in 2021, returning in 2023 with The Apple Tree: Christmas with Seraphic Fire.
