Rebecca Miller

Conductor Rebecca Miller has been active with various British ensembles as well as with those in her native U.S. She also pursues avid interests in musical education and in the leadership aspects of conducting, often holding workshops in the latter area. Miller was born in Palo Alto, California, in 1975. Her mother, Leta Miller, was a flutist. Rebecca attended Oberlin University in Ohio, earning a bachelor's degree in piano. Switching to conducting, she moved to Northwestern University, earning a master's degree, and went on to the Royal College of Music in London. There, she was the Paul Woodhouse Junior Fellow in Conducting. She founded the New Professionals Orchestra in London. Miller also served for some years as conductor at the Royal Academy of Music's Junior Department and was conductor of the Southbank Sinfonia, a London training ensemble. At the Royal Academy of Music, she formed the JA Classical Orchestra. She won the Eduardo Mata Conducting Competition. Miller made her recording debut in 2004 on the Mode label, leading the New Professionals Orchestra on the album Lou Harrison: For Strings. Since the early 2000s, Miller has been active in both the U.S. and Britain, but more often in the latter; she is married to pianist Danny Driver, and the two have a daughter. She served as the American Conducting Fellow with the Houston Symphony Orchestra from 2005 to 2007 and as resident conductor of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra from 2007 to 2010. Miller has made guest conducting appearances with orchestras on both sides of the Atlantic, including the Nashville Symphony, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC Concert Orchestra, among many others. She was chief conductor of the Uppsala Chamber Orchestra from 2019 to 2023. As of the mid-2020s, Miller was serving as director of orchestras at Royal Holloway University in London, where she founded the school's Orchestral Scholarship program, supervises side-by-side projects with the London Mozart Players, runs orchestral seminars, and teaches conducting courses. Miller has made several recordings for the Signum Classics label, leading major ensembles such as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the Royal Northern Sinfonia. In 2024, she led the BBC Concert Orchestra on the album Dorothy Howell: Orchestral Works. Miller is an experienced public speaker who has addressed the lessons of conducting for leadership more generally. She is the founder of Beyond Borders, an online platform for conductors, musicians, and classical music leaders addressing issues in the music industry.
