Mario Ancillotti

Flutist Mario Ancillotti has collaborated with various major musicians as an orchestral player, soloist, and chamber musician. He is also a significant educator. Ancillotti was born in Florence in 1946. He studied at the Cherubini Conservatory in Florence, where he came under the influence of a great variety of musicians, not only flutists. These included composer Luigi Dallapiccola, the Quartetto Italiano, and flutist-composer Carlo Prosperi. After graduation, Ancillotti landed a place with the RAI Orchestra in Rome, where he and Severino Gazzelloni shared first-chair duties. He also performed with the Accademia di Santa Cecilia Orchestra. In 1979, Ancillotti resigned his orchestral positions to devote full time to solo performance and chamber music. His career as a recording artist stretches back to the early digital era; one early release appeared on the Dynamic label in 1993 and was devoted to flute-and-piano works by Carl Reinecke, Julius Rietz, and Bernhard Molique. Ancillotti's list of collaborators as a concerto soloist and chamber player is long, including such prominent figures as violinists Salvatore Accardo and Vladimir Spivakov and conductors Peter Maag and Riccardo Muti. He is a supporter of contemporary music who has worked with major composers, including Luciano Berio, Krzysztof Penderecki, and Hans Werner Henze. Ancillotti was the founder and organizer of several music festivals in Italy and abroad, namely those on Italy's Elba Island, in Chengdu, China, and the cross-disciplinary Suoni Riflessi Festival in Florence. He has a large recording catalog, making albums for Dynamic, Brilliant, Naxos, and other labels; for the latter, in 2024, he recorded the complete music for flute and piano by composer Mel Bonis. Ancillotti is a prominent educator who has taught at conservatories in Rome, Florence, and the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland, as well as giving master classes and seminars around Europe, the Americas, and East Asia.
