Marianna Shirinyan

Pianist Marianna Shirinyan is a versatile artist whose repertory extends from Bach to contemporary works. She is also a significant educator and festival administrator. Shirinyan was born on September 25, 1978, in the Armenian capital of Yerevan. She attended the Komitas State Conservatory of Music in Yerevan, studying piano, and went on for further study at the Lübeck Academy of Music in Germany; at the latter, she was employed as a piano teacher and accompanist. A first prize at Germany's Junge Ensembles Musizieren ("Youth Chamber Music Competition") in 1994 was the first in a long series of prizes that boosted Shirinyan's career. She won several more youth honors, and then, with prizes at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival and the Possehl Music Award competition in Lübeck in 2001, she began to rack up adult honors. These included a first prize at the International Lions Competition in 2002 and five awards at the ARD International Music Competition. Shirinyan moved to Denmark and earned the P2 Artist Prize from Danish Radio for her contributions to the musical and artistic life in that country. In 2011, she made her debut recording on the Fuga Libera label, backing violinist Hrachya Avanesyan on an album of works by Dvořák. Shirinyan has appeared as a soloist with major orchestras both within Denmark, including the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, and beyond, such as the Philharmonic Orchestras of Oslo and Helsinki, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice in France. With a large repertory of concertos and solo and chamber works, she has been in demand at festivals, including the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Bodensee Festival, the Schwetzinger Festspiele, and the Festspillene in Bergen. Shirinyan has recorded mainly Romantic works for such labels as CPO, Dacapo, and Orchid Classics. On Fuga Libera, she accompanied soprano Elise Caluwaerts on the 2023 album Alma: Meine Seele -- Complete Songs of Alma Mahler. Shirinyan has served as artistic director of the Fejø Chamber Music Festival and the Oremandsgaard Kammermusikfest. She taught for some years at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where she has continued to hold guest professorships, and she is a professor at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo.
