Heike Matthiesen

Guitarist Heike Matthiesen studied with Pepe Romero and regularly performed as a soloist and with chamber music groups on several continents. She was noted as a champion of music by women, both contemporary and from earlier historical eras. Matthiesen was born on June 27, 1964, in Braunschweig, in West Germany's Lower Saxony state. Her father was a choral conductor, her mother was a pianist, and both were interested in opera. Matthiesen had a broad musical education, including piano lessons, but she did not begin guitar lessons until she was 18. Making rapid progress, she enrolled after a year at the Musikhochschule Frankfurt for studies with Heinz Teuchert, helping pay her way after a year by performing with the Frankfurter Opern- und Museumsorchester. She continued to appear with that group and also had a long association with the Villa Musica venue in Mainz. After graduating, she went on for private lessons with guitarist Pepe Romero, whom she regarded as a key influence on her playing. She replaced him in a 1996 concert by the Romero Brothers. She also attended master classes with Leo Brouwer, Manuel Barrueco, Roland Dyens, and others. In 2001, Matthiesen released her debut album, Sol y Luna. Matthiesen appeared as both a soloist and chamber musician in an exceptionally wide variety of places, including the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Germany, and the Salzburg Festival in Austria. She performed in many European countries and as far afield as East Asia, the U.S., and several African countries, including Equatorial Guinea. Matthiesen was a familiar sight at international guitar festivals. She was noted for commissioning and performing new works by women composers and also for giving premieres of earlier works by women. Matthiesen operated the Archiv Frau und Musik, a collection of music by women, and curated its guitar section. Another notable feature of Matthiesen's career was her use of online media and social media to promote her music; some of her online videos had more than 2,000,000 views. She made several more recordings, including Guitar Divas, which appeared on the Ars Produktion label in 2023. Matthiesen suffered from malignant melanoma in her later years but continued to perform. She died from the disease on December 22, 2023.
