Gli Angeli Genève

The vocal-instrumental early music ensemble Gli Angeli Genève maintains a busy schedule, including multiple concert series at home in Geneva and guest appearances with various other groups around Europe. The group combines veteran performers in the field of Baroque music with students building a career in the field. Gli Angeli Genève ("The Geneva Angels") was founded in 2005 by Stephan MacLeod, a bass-baritone singer as well as a conductor who has maintained a parallel career in vocal music. He continues to serve as its conductor as of the mid-2020s. In its early years, the group included both well-known figures in the early music field, such as soprano Hana Blažíková and violinist Chiara Banchini, and students from music schools in Geneva, Basel, and Lausanne, Switzerland, and Lyon, France. The ensemble has a flexible membership whose large contingent of singers and instrumentalists permits the performance of large-scale choral works. Gli Angeli Genève was successful from the beginning, performing frequently in Geneva and attracting the attention of major recording companies. Since its early days, the group has given performances of Bach's cantatas, and its first two releases, German Baroque Cantatas, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, appeared on the Sony Classical label in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Gli Angeli Genève offers various concerts each year in Geneva, including a Bach cantata series, concerts at the city's Victoria Hall, concerts at the group's annual Haydn-Mozart Festival, a new (as of 2022) Chambre des Anges series devoted to chamber music, and many concerts for schools. The group's repertory stretches from Josquin Desprez in the late Renaissance period to Haydn and Mozart. Gli Angeli Genève has held residencies at the Utrecht Festival in the Netherlands and the Thüringer Bachwochen in Germany and has performed concerts in many countries beyond Switzerland, including Spain, France, and Canada. In 2017, the group moved to the Claves label, releasing the album Sacred Music of the 17th Century in Wrocław. After several more albums on Claves, including those of Bach's St. Matthew Passion and St. John Passion, Gli Angeli Genève moved to Aparté for the album Josquin Desprez: Malheur me bat.
