David Greco

Baritone David Greco has appeared on-stage in concert and operatic productions throughout Europe, New Zealand, and his native Australia. Performing a wide range of music, Greco has found significant success singing early music. He has taken an active role as a historical music researcher, issuing a series of historically informed recordings of Schubert's song cycles, with a recording of the composer's Schwanengesang appearing in 2023. Greco was born in Sydney, Australia, and earned a bachelor's degree from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2003. His recording debut came shortly afterward when he appeared on a 2005 Pinchgut Opera recording of Monteverdi's L'Orfeo. Greco had a breakthrough opportunity in 2006 when he was chosen as a soloist for Emma Kirkby's Australian tour. More performing opportunities followed, and Greco sung with groups in his native country, such as the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, and Australian Chamber Orchestra. He continued appearing regularly with the Pinchgut Opera and was a full-time chorus member for Opera Australia from 2007 to 2008. Greco continued his studies at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague with Peter Kooij and Michael Chance, earning a bachelor's degree in early music in 2011. While in the Netherlands, Greco made appearances with Ton Koopman and his Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Choir, and made his debut at the Royal Concertgebouw with Le Nuove Musiche in a performance of Monteverdi's Madrigali Guerrieri et Amorosi. After two years as a lay clerk with the Westminster Abbey Choir, Greco became the first Australian to be appointed as a member of the Vatican's Sistine Chapel Choir in 2014. Greco's engagements increased in the following years, and he made notable appearances with major orchestras, opera companies, and at festivals in Europe and Australia, including a tour of Handel's Messiah with the Academy of Ancient Music. Greco earned a doctorate from Melbourne University in 2020, writing his thesis on the techniques and expressivity of 19th century singers. His supervisor for his PhD was Erin Helyard, who has accompanied Greco on a series of historically informed recordings of Schubert's song cycles, the first Australian recording project of its kind. The first of these recordings, offering the composer's Winterreise cycle, was issued by ABC Classics in 2018. The following year, Greco was backed by the Luthers Bach Ensemble for the Brilliant Classics recording Bach: Solo Cantatas for Bass. In 2020, Greco was heard on several releases, including Schubert: Die schone Müllerin, the second in his survey with Helyard; the recording earned an ARIA Award nomination. The duo returned in 2023 with Schubert's Schwanengesang.
