Anneleen Lenaerts
Harpist Anneleen Lenaerts is one of her instrument's leading contemporary exponents. She has concertized widely both as a solo harpist and as a concerto soloist, and she is the principal harpist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
Lenaerts was born on April 26, 1987, in Peer, in Belgium's Limburg region. Her first teacher was Lieve Robbroeckx, and she began an impressive run of 23 prize wins in 1997. Lenaerts attended the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, taking a traditional series of courses that included harmony, counterpoint, and fugue. She moved on to the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris for lessons with Isabelle Perrin. Lenaerts won two prizes for talented young musicians, one from the government of Belgium's Flanders region in 2005, and the other an International Cultural Prize for Youth from the government of Upper and Lower Normandy. These led to various scholarships and prizes, and Lenaerts rounded out her education with classes from Jana Boukova. By the late 2000s decade, she was ready for top-level concert appearances with the Brussels Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, among many others. As a soloist, she has appeared at many of the world's top venues, including Wigmore Hall in London, Carnegie Hall in New York, and the Berliner Philharmonie. Lenaerts was appointed principal harpist of both the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna State Opera in 2010. She performs in a duo with clarinetist Dionysos Grammenos, and she is on the faculty of the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands. Lenaerts is also an ongoing member of the faculty at the Aspen Music Festival in the U.S. state of Colorado.
Lenaerts recorded an album of harp transcriptions of music by Chopin and Liszt for the Aliud label in the early 2010s. In 2015, she began a series of harp concerto recordings with the Brussels Philharmonic for Warner Classics, and she was signed exclusively to that label. Her 2019 recording of works for harp by Nino Rota earned her first Opus Klassik Award.
