Andrea Buccarella
Active as both a keyboardist and leader of the Abchordis Ensemble, Andrea Buccarella is establishing himself on Italy's early music scene. He also performs as an organist.
Buccarella was born on November 9, 1987, in Rome. His first exposure to performing and to serious musical studies came as puer cantor (or boy singer) in the Sistine Chapel Choir, of which he was a member from 1997 to 2000. Buccarella went on to the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome, earning diplomas in organ, organ composition, and harpsichord and other historical keyboard instruments. In the latter field, his teacher was Enrico Baiano. Buccarella then moved to Switzerland for further studies at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, Switzerland, studying with Andrea Marcon and earning harpsichord and historical-keyboard master's degrees. In 2012, he became artistic director and conductor of Abchordis Ensemble, and he resolved to use the group as a vehicle for presenting music he rediscovered through research, principally sacred works and opera from 18th century Italy. In 2015, the Abchordis Ensemble won first prize at the International Händel Competition in Göttingen, Germany.
Meanwhile, Buccarella's solo career was developing steadily. In 2018, he won first prize and the Outhere Award at the International Harpsichord Competition Musica Antiqua Bruges in Belgium; he was the first Italian to take these prizes in the competition's history. He performed in halls in Europe, the U.S., South Korea, and Japan, variously on harpsichord, organ, and fortepiano. Buccarella made his recording debut in 2019 as conductor of the Abchordis Ensemble with the album Il Soffio di Partenope: Works for Woodwind Instruments from 18th Century Naples, and his solo debut, Toccata, exploring that durable Baroque genre, followed later that year. He has continued to record for Challenge Classics, Naïve, and PentaTone, where he released an album of Bach's concertos for two harpsichords with Francesco Corti and the ensemble Il Pomo d'Oro in 2022.
