Weezer sind zurück! Endlich, nach fünf langen Jahren, in denen sie kein wirkliches Lebenszeichen von sich gegeben zu haben, erscheint ein neues Album. Dieses ist - wie das Debut auch - schlicht "Weezer" betitelt.
Mit etwas Skepsis mache ich mich an die neue Platte heran. Mitte der 90er waren Weezer eine der besten Bands ihres Genres und Rivers Cuomo wohl einer der begnadetsten Songwriter weit und breit. Doch können Weezer auch im neuen Jahrtausend überzeugen? Der Opener "Don't Let Go" lässt mich noch etwas ratlos zurück, sicher, das klingt schon nach Weezer, aber das Gefühl von früher stellt sich nicht ein, noch nicht. Denn schon die nächsten beiden Songs machen klar - Weezer haben nichts von ihrem Können eingebüßt. Ganz besonders die erste Single "Hash Pipe" bringt den alten Zauber binnen weniger Sekunden zurück. Typischer Weezer-Gitarrensound, mitreißender Refrain, alles da, was man so lange vermisst hat.
Ähnlich grandios geht es weiter, "Island In The Sun", könnte auch "In The Garage 2001" heißen, eines der ruhigeren Stücke, welches einem schon nach kurzer Zeit nicht mehr los lässt. Besonders dieses "hip hip" im Refrain verfolgt einen noch Tage später. Bis zum Schluss lässt die Band nichts mehr anbrennen und keiner der Songs fällt ab. Hervorzuheben wäre vielleicht noch "O Girlfriend", eines der schönsten Stücke der Platte.
Weezer 2001 klingen stellenweise schon anders als noch vor fünf Jahren. Etwas abgeklärter, nicht mehr ganz so frisch und neu. Aber sie sind noch immer eine der besten Rockbands auf diesem Planeten. Also los, kaufen, sofort!
