Zehn Jahre gibt es sie schon, The Beautiful South, und das siebte Album "Quench" ist nun da. Förmlich ins Ohr springen der HörerIn die faszinierenden Melodien, so leicht und unbeschwert dahingeträllert, wie es einfach nur ein Paul Heaton zusammen mit Jacqueline Abbott kann, denen man das Grinsen fast anmerkt, wenn man das Textbook mal aufschlägt und erahnt, was für Dinge denn da so fröhlich besungen werden: Ob Tränen Flecken machen ('How Long's a Tear Take to Dry'), daß man magersüchtige Hühner kaum sehen kann ('Perfect 10') und daß Eichentische, wenn sie nicht respektiert werden, sich schnell zum Eichensarg verwandeln könnten ('The Table').
Was da klingt wie Drafi Deutschers "Dam dam dam" heißt bei The Beautiful South einfach nur "Blöd blöd blöd" ('Dumb'). Bissige Texte also, nur selten platt moralisch ('Look What I Found in My Beer'), untermalt von der Musik, die einfach dermaßen perfekt ausgetüftelt und so selbstverständlich, manchmal bluesig, manchmal poppig, dazugehört, die Wichtigkeit der Stimmen mit ihren Melodien aber in keinster Weise in Frage stellt. Ganz nebenbei spielt Paul Weller in 'The Slide' ein bißchen Gitarre und Norman Cook hat natürlich auch wieder seine Finger im Spiel - diesmal als Rhythmus-Berater und in dem Gebiet ist er ja eh ungeschlagen.
So ist das Album auf zweierlei Weise ein Genuß: Musikalisch exzellent und wohl durchdacht, wenn auch nichts neues, aber schön, eingängich und alles andere als langweilig. The Beautiful South eben. Und wenn Ihr dann die Lieder alle nachpfeifen könnt, dann lest doch als Zugabe einfach mal die Texte mit und kramt Euer Englisch-Wörterbuch aus dem Regal - es lohnt sich!
