This release is part of a series by the veteran Italian historical-performance ensemble Il Giardino Armonico, presenting all of Haydn's symphonies not chronologically but in thematic groups, with a contemporary work not by Haydn included on each release. The series is set to run until 2032, and one may wonder in what medium it will be transmitted then. If you're interested, you might check out this entry: the program concept is sharp and novel. All the works revolve around comic opera in some way, and two of them actually present the orchestra as a character in a little comic sketch. The Symphony No. 60 in C major, Hob. 1/60, is unique among Haydn's symphonies in having originated as incidental music for a play, Le distrait (The Distracted Man); the orchestra over its six movements depicts characters from the play, and the work as a whole exploits Haydn's profound sense of comedy to the hilt. The Symphony No. 12 in E major, Hob. 1/12, is suffused in the musical language of opera buffa; it sounds melodically a bit like young Mozart, but the monothematic construction of its opening movement betrays its author. The connection to theater of the Symphony No. 70 in D major, Hob. 1/70, is more tenuous; Antonini suggests that a rising figure in its fugal finale could have symbolized the construction of the opera house at Eszterháza, for whose inauguration the work was composed. The scene Il Maestro di Cappella by Domenico Cimarosa, a little comedy about a conductor and his recalcitrant orchestra, is an inspired pick for the finale, and one should also mention the collection of droll photographs that adorns the booklet. A good place to start with Alpha's series.
