Brad Mehldau kann man wirklich nicht vorwerfen, dass er sich auf seinen Lorbeeren ausruht oder immer wieder dasselbe macht. Mit Finding Gabriel präsentiert der amerikanische Pianist ein ehrgeiziges und facettenreiches Album, das die bekannten Trennlinien des Jazz weit hinter sich lässt. Schon 2014 hatte er mit dem Schlagzeuger Mark Guiliana eine hervorragende Platte geschaffen: Mehliana: Taming the Dragon. Und dieser Jahrgang 2019 scheint eine Fortsetzung davon zu sein, in weitaus üppigerer Form. Finding Gabriel ist vor allem die Folge davon, dass er sich in die Lektüre der Bibel vertieft hat; das ist auch der Grund für den Erzengel Gabriel im Titel … „Viele Stücke habe ich eingangs mit Synthesizern und Mark Guiliana am Schlagzeug besetzt. Ich bin in ähnlicher Weise vorgegangen wie bei Taming the Dragon. Dann kam eine Schicht nach der anderen hinzu und die menschliche Stimme wurde ein wichtiges Element, jedoch ohne irgendwelche Worte, sondern im Sinne von rein harmonischem, gefühlvollem Ausdruck.“
Beim ersten Anhören wirkt es etwas verstörend, denn das mystische Resultat – wie könnte es auch anders sein – ist ganz einfach faszinierend und quillt vor Ideen nur so über. Wenn Mehldau an seinem Klavier sitzt, an seinen Synthesizern (dazu gehören Dave Smith / Tom Oberheim OB-6), seinem Fender Rhodes, am Schlagzeug, oder auch – und das ist eine Premiere! – am Mikrofon steht, dann lässt er vor uns eine mit dem Fusion Jazz flirtende (Pat Metheny oder Weather Report lassen grüßen) Sinfonie voller Bläser, Streicher und Elektro vorbeiziehen, in der die menschliche Stimme einen ganz besonderen Stellenwert hat. Der amerikanische Pianist ist übrigens nicht der einzige, der singt, denn er hat insbesondere Kurt Elling, Becca Stevens und Gabriel Kahane zu sich gebeten. Unter den Gästen befinden sich aber auch die Violinistin Sara Caswell, der Trompeter Ambrose Akinmusire, die Saxofonisten Joel Frahm, Charles Pillow und Chris Cheek sowie der Flötist Michael Thomas. Im Endergebnis liefert Brad Mehldau eine recht originelle, spirituelle Odyssee, die mit den Werken für sein Trio kaum etwas zu tun hat. © Max Dembo/Qobuz
