Shambolics

Following a brief, early-career dabble with hazy, jangly dream pop, the album-charting iteration of Scottish indie rockers Shambolics are a more muscular and polished -- but no less quirky -- outfit. Core members, songwriters, guitarists, and dual lead vocalists Lewis McDonald and Darren Forbes, spent many evenings as teenagers in Kirkcaldy, Fife's Ravenscraig Park, drinking and making plans to form a band. They were introduced by bassist Jordan McHatton, a school friend of McDonald, but it wasn't until 2015 -- when each member was in his twenties -- that Shambolics were formed. Drummer Andrew Finlay completed the lineup and in 2016 they self-released a pair of Arctic Monkeys-flavored demo recordings: "Scarlett Harlett" and "When She Goes Home." With regular appearances at Kirkcaldy's Windsor Hotel, they honed their live set over the next few years, occasionally fulfilling dates further afield in Glasgow, Dunfermline, and Manchester. Recorded at Glasgow's Eggman Studios, their distortion-filled, frenetic, and powerful November 2018 single, "My Time Is Now," was a rough-around-the-edges hint at the sound with which they would ultimately find success. On the way there, the Shambolics took a slight detour, with a run of janglier, sun-dappled singles on Alan McGee's short-lived Creation23 imprint, including November 2019's "Chasing a Disaster" and February 2020's "Sandra Speed." By this point, Finlay had left the band and was replaced by Jake Bain on drums. With the refreshed lineup, Shambolics played a sold-out show at Glasgow's St. Luke's in March, just prior to the national COVID-19 lockdowns. Seminal Glasgow indie label Electric Honey helped with the release of October's Smiths-like "Love Collides" before the band relocated early the following year to become a bigger part of that city's music scene. The self-released 2021's "Dreams, Schemes & Young Teams," "Sharp as a Razor," and "If You Want It" were their first singles to be produced by the Gerry Cinnamon collaborator Chris Marshall. Marshall's precise production style gave Shambolics a crunchier, weightier feel, primed perfectly for mainstream alternative radio. By the end of the year, their sound was further augmented with the addition of Scotty Paws on keyboards. 2022 kicked off with a show at Glasgow's 1,000-capacity SWG3, an event swiftly followed by the reflective March single, "Losing Your Mind." Ben Sharp replaced McHatton on bass ahead of the band signing with Scruff of the Neck, home of the Reytons. The Manchester label issued their first EP, U SERIOUS BOI?!, in April 2023, following a prestigious slot supporting Richard Ashcroft at The Big Top on the outskirts of Edinburgh. With the Marshall-produced sessions for their debut album already in the can, they began to release singles from it later that year, including "Attention," a collaboration with the View's Kyle Falconer. Dreams, Schemes & Young Teams arrived in February 2024, charting at number three in Scotland. With the remainder of the band unable to commit to the LP's promotional push, McDonald and Forbes pushed on as a duo.
