The Mavericks, an Americana group formed in 1989, are known for a handful of tracks (All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down, Dance the Night Away and Here Comes the Rain) and here release their first album in cuban, the language of cofounder Raul Malo's ancestors. With both popular songs shared among the family and original compositions, En Español holds the sweet scent of a joyous party and western latino with its saloon guitars (La Sitiera), open-space ballads (Recuerdos), its Cuban styles (Me Voy a Pinar del Río), tex-mex songs with the illustrious singer and accordionist Flaco Jimenez (No Vale la Pena), joyous fanfare (Poder Vivir) and romantic mambo (Mujer). The arrangements are classic but ample, the singer determined and seductive. Of course, it is nothing revolutionary, but the perfect evocation of a popular and smiling America in which communities unite to celebrate the simple values of life. © Benjamin MiNiMuM/Qobuz
