Like the blues, or the saudade in a Portuguese fado, Brazilian pop music (known as MPB, born from bossa and samba) eternally celebrates its sweet existential melancholy. One of the best performers of Brazilian pop music today goes by the simple name “Rogê”. He comes from Rio de Janeiro, but he moved to Los Angeles a few years ago to escape Bolsonaro’s political regime. It has been a gateway for him to reach North American and European listeners, who were already familiar with him thanks to a magnificent duet album he released with Seu Jorge in 2020.
This new album was recorded in California by Thomas Brenneck, the guitarist and producer of the Daptone galaxy (e.g. Charles Bradley, Sharon Jones, Lee Fields). A vintage aesthete, Thomas Brenneck is a magician who has managed to bring back the best of 60’s soul in the 2000’s. He undoubtedly saw a like mind in Rogê, electing him the middleman to revive the great ghosts of Brazilian music; an idea that has played out tremendously well. Curyman, which is more retro than Rogê’s other albums, sounds like a forgotten classic, a definitive best of samba pop, afro, and funk from the 60’s and 70’s. As if by magic, it is all brought back and blended together: there are classical guitars, voodoo percussion and tear jerking pop melodies that still manage to get you on your feet. The project even features Arthur Verocai's incredible string arrangements, and yes, it is actually him!
