Futurebirds

Hailing from the bohemian college town of Athens, Georgia, Futurebirds play laid-back country-rock with an atmospheric, psychedelic twist. Sounding twangy and amiable, Futurebirds are known among their fans for their eclectic creative spirit, making music that incorporates the clever angles of indie rock, the tuneful melodies of pop, and the open-ended adventure of jam-band sounds along with the very Southern sound that first made them hometown heroes. Futurebirds' approach, honed by extensive touring, found its voice in the recording studio on 2013's Baba Yaga and 2015's Hotel Parties, while 2023's Bloomin' was a collaboration with kindred spirit Carl Broemel, guitarist with My Morning Jacket. The Futurebirds story began in 2008, when guitarists and singers Daniel Womack and Carter King, two University of Georgia students who were members of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, decided they wanted to start a band. The two began playing out in a group called Anjeco, while another band called the Interns began appearing at Athens clubs around the same time. In time, both bands fell apart, and guitarist Thomas Johnson and drummer Payton Bradford of the Interns teamed with Womack and King to form a new band. The four began working up material, and adopting the name Futurebirds, they began working on an EP titled Hampton's Lullaby. The four-song release arrived in July 2010, and soon the band expanded to include bassist Brannen Miles and pedal steel guitarist Dennis Love. The EP caught the attention of Autumn Tone Records, who struck a deal with Futurebirds, and the band booked time at Chase Park Transduction in Athens to expand Hampton's Lullaby into an eleven-song album that came out that same year. A pair of EPs – EP and Via Flamina – appeared in 2011 while the band was ramping up their touring schedule. Futurebirds moved on to a new record deal with Fat Possum Records, and their second full-length album, Baba Yaga, arrived in 2013. By this time, Payton Bradford dropped out of the group to attend law school, and Johnny "Colorado" Lundock replaced him behind the drums. 2015 saw the release of their third album, Hotel Parties, which dealt in part with the pleasures and difficulties of life on the road. Heavy touring occupied the band for the next several years, and they didn't bring out an album until 2020, when Teamwork was issued via their own VL/4L imprint. Futurebirds were one of many bands who found themselves taking an unscheduled sabbatical when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down live music in the United States, and it wasn't until 2022 that they resumed touring. By this time, Dennis Love and Johnny "Colorado" Lundock were out of the group, and three new members had come on board – Kiffy Myers on pedal steel guitar, Tom Myers on drums, and Spencer Thomas on keyboards. Futurebirds had played a number of shows with their friend Carl Broemel, guitarist with My Morning Jacket, who had joined the group in the studio to record a four-song EP, 2021's Bloomin'. A second collaborative EP, Bloomin' Too, was released in 2022, and the following year, the two EPs were combined for a 11-song vinyl release, also called Bloomin'.
