Géant de la musique classique allemande, Wilhelm Backhaus (1884-1969) est souvent apparu comme un rigoriste dénué de fantaisie. Son immense legs discographique pour Decca, encore assez rare à l’époque, est réédité aujourd’hui dans d’excellentes conditions. À propos

Géant de la musique classique allemande, Wilhelm Backhaus (1884-1969) est souvent apparu comme un rigoriste dénué de fantaisie. Son immense legs discographique pour Decca, encore assez rare à l’époque, est réédité aujourd’hui dans d’excellentes conditions. Il permet de réévaluer à la hausse une réputation trop souvent injuste. Backhaus nous apparaît singulièrement plus moderne qu’autrefois grâce à son respect du texte et à ses interprétations sans esbroufe qui cernent au mieux les compositeurs, depuis le premier enregistrement jamais réalisé d’un concerto, celui de Grieg, sévèrement abrégé en 1909, jusqu’à son dernier concert quelques jours avant sa mort.
