Née dans la misère au pied des Smoky Mountains, dans l'est du Tennessee - une des 12 enfants élevés dans une maisonnette d'une chambre - Dolly Parton a commencé à se produire (et à subvenir aux besoins de sa famille) à l'âge de 10 ans. Elle est montée sur la scène du Grand Ole Opry avant de terminer ses études secondaires, puis est allée à Nashville pour écrire des chansons pour des gens comme Skeeter Davis et Kitty Wells. Bien qu'elle n'ait pas écrit son premier single, "Dumb Blonde" en 1967, elle a néanmoins donné le ton de son attitude pleine d'esprit et de son esthétique très travaillée. Elle a également signé avec le musicien impresario Porter Wagoner, apparaissant dans son émission de télévision hebdomadaire et enregistrant des duos. Sa carrière solo a commencé à s'envoler avec "Jolene", "Coat of Many Colors" et son premier numéro 1, "Joshua". Mais c'est sa séparation professionnelle du contrôle de Wagoner qui l'a conduite à écrire l'une de ses plus grandes chansons, l'indélébile "I Will Always Love You". Alors même qu'elle passait en territoire pop - avec "Here You Come Again", film à succès "9 to 5" et le duo "Islands in the Stream" avec Kenny Rogers - Dolly ne s'est jamais trop éloignée de ses racines. Elle a toujours été liée au bluegrass et à la musique des montagnes des Appalaches.
