will.i.am avait su trouver le ton juste et le bon équilibre avec Lost Change (2001) et Song About Girls (2007), avec un R&B dance marqué par la fantaisie d'un des plus importants faiseurs de tendance de la période. La déception est forcément immense à l'écoute de #willpower où il semble vouloir faire la course à l’échalote avec David Guetta. #willpower est un vide intersidéral de quinze chansons (dix-huit en version deluxe) qui semblent toutes avoir été plus improvisés qu'écrites.
Le schéma est le même sur la majorité des titres. On convoque un invité prestigieux (Britney Spears, Justin Bieber), on lance un beat dance aux BPM dûment ajustés, le tout est saupoudré des artifices de production les plus communs possibles et servi tiède à la radio FM du coin. Où will.i.am a t'il égaré la légèreté qui faisait le charme de ses précédents albums ? Ici seule semble compter la course au tube, d'ailleurs parfaitement réussie avec « Scream & Shout » en compagnie de Britney Spears. De précurseur, will.i.am s'est mû pour notre plus grand malheur en suiveur de ses pires imitateurs.
En faisant un effort considérable, il est possible de sauver du bouillon « Love Bullets » avec Skylar Grey et « Fall Down » avec Miley Cyrus qui échappent de justesse à la linéarité ambiante avec quelques coupures bienvenues dans le tempo. #willpower ressemble à un travail à la chaîne besogneux, là où will.i.am avait toujours fait souffler un vent de fraîcheur ludique tant en solo qu'avec Black Eyed Peas.
La sortie de l'album décalée selon will.i.am pour une perte de maquettes, ne peut en elle seule justifier l'indigence du disque. Par contre, l'accusation de plagiat lancée par les DJ Arty et Mat Jo pour « Let's Go » qui serait très fortement inspiré de leur titre « Rebound », vient encore plus ternir de sa suspicion la sortie de #willpower. #willpower suit son titre et n'est guère plus étoffé qu'un tweet. Dommage pour un artiste qui vient à peine de fêter ses trente-huit ans. C'est à se demander si ce n'est pas une forme d'humour particulièrement tordue de la part de will.i.am.
