Est-ce la pression du fameux « difficile deuxième album » qui a poussé The Avalanches à attendre seize ans avant de donner une suite à leur premier album, Since I Left You, paru en novembre 2000 ? Quelle que soit la raison d’une aussi longue absence, Robbie Chater et Tony Di Blasi livre avec Wildflower un disque qui s’inscrit totalement dans la lignée de son prédécesseur. Même si l’ADN de la musique des Australiens est majoritairement rap (son esprit du moins), elle reste avant tout une sorte de patchwork total, festif et bigarré, en phase avec la culture du zapping et de l’écoute aléatoire. Des samples à foison dans tous les styles possibles, des invités à n’en plus finir (au hasard, Kevin ‘Tame Impala’ Parker, David Berman des Silver Jews, les rappeurs Danny Brown, MF Doom et Biz Markie sans oublier Warren Ellis des Bad Seeds, Jonathan Donahue de Mercury Rev et Josh Tillman, ex-batteur des Fleet Foxes devenu Father John Misty) et une sorte de joie permanente réellement communicative, Wildflower est un carnaval sensoriel et spirituel. La saveur calypso de Frankie Sinatra, l’allégresse du rap old school sur The Noisy Eater, la sensation cinématographique à la Air échappée du titre Wildflower, le psychédélisme pop très Beatles d’Harmony, tout y passe dans ce trip unique qui renversera tant les fanatiques de musiques (avec un s) que les simples touristes en mal de musique hédoniste et délurée. © MZ/Qobuz
