Incapable de terminer le projet qui devait surpasser Tommy, Pete Townshend arrivera à boucler ce Who’s Next qui n’est autre que l’un des plus grands albums des Who. Ses compositions ont conservé la grandeur de celle de l’opéra rock sans la grandiloquence que lui reprocheront certains fans. Les Anglais se surpassent ici avec Baba O'Riley, Bargain, Love Ain't For Keeping, Behind Blue Eyes (quelle prestation de Daltrey !) et bouclent leur chef d’œuvre avec le démentiel Won't Get Fooled Again, synthèse de toute une vie musicale, furieuse et engagée. Avec Who’s Next, Townshend entasse d’impressionnants murs de guitares acoustiques et électriques et bidouille ses synthés dans tous les sens. Derrière ses fûts, Keith Moon fait son impressionnant numéro d’acrobate.
