Vert, bleu, rouge, blanc. Pour compléter la discographie gagnante de Weezer commencée à l'heure du déclin grunge, Rivers Cuomo a misé sur le noir. Après la sortie début janvier 2019 du Teal Album, dix reprises balayant 40 ans de musique allant du Happy Together des Turtles au No Scrubs des TLC, Cuomo soulignerait-il que lui aussi aura une postérité au panthéon des tubes ? Si on n'y retrouvera pas la puissance d'un Island in the Sun, ce Black Album respire la pop la plus bubble-gum de Weezer. Celle dont ils ont le savoir-faire. C'est sûr que les élucubrations Pro Tools et les gimmicks commerciaux faisant rimer Pacific Dream (2017) avec mainstream avaient de quoi en laisser plus d'un sur le carreau. Retour à une pop plus légère, mieux arrangée et donc moins ampoulée, Weezer parfait sa panoplie Pentatone. Si l'on y retrouve une tripotée de refrains consensuels faits de "tulululu" (Piece of Cake), des chœurs surannés (Can't Knock the Hustle) ou de mélodies Chamallow écumées (I'm Just Being Honest), la formule fonctionne. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz
