A-t-on déjà entendu Brent Faiyaz chanter un titre banal ? Révélé en 2017 grâce à son premier album Sonder Son, confirmé comme artiste fascinant avec l’EP Fuck the World en 2020, le natif de Columbia combine sa voix désabusée à un sens rythmique aiguisé et des productions fondues par une chaleur synthétique. Dès le premier titre, Loose Change, il délaisse les drums, leur préférant des arrangements harmoniques savants, plaçant d’emblée le chant au cœur de cette tracklist. Il explore les relations amoureuses dans des interludes, recréant des scènes de vie, des disputes, se questionne sur la paternité… Il peut modifier sa voix, la rendant plus grave, plus profonde sur le single Price of Fame, voyage en contrées sidérantes de lourdeur, ou faire parler la poudre en compagnie de Tyler, The Creator sur Gravity, produit par le grand DJ Dahi. Brent Faiyaz a passé un cap. Ça se voit dans la liste des artistes invités comme Alicia Keys sur l’épuré Ghetto Gatsby ou Drake et The Neptunes sur le pénétrant Wasting Time. Mais c’est lorsqu’il est seul, dans un tête-à-tête avec la prod, qu’il semble le plus inventif.
