Quatre millions d’albums. Voilà où en est Garbage après son premier disque. Le quatuor passe au « difficile » second. Pas si dur que ça, quand on sait que Garbage, c’est la somme de quatre solides carrières. Trois producteurs du Wisconsin, Butch Vigh (Nevermind de Nirvana), Duke Erikson et Steve Marker qui sortent Shirley Manson de son Écosse natale après un clip d’Angelfish – son ancien groupe – passé à 2 heures du matin sur MTV. Shirley a huit albums derrière elle. Ce second Garbage est plus confiant. Le meilleur selon eux. A l’immédiateté de Garbage, Version 2.0 réplique avec une poésie polysémique, une émulsion d’émotions plus profondes, montée en surcouche. Il y a différents niveaux de lecture et une esthétique visuelle sculptée aux côtés du vidéaste Andrea Giacobi qui agit comme une persistance rétinienne. Si Push It fait le pont entre les deux opus, le reste sert d’approfondissement. Le quatuor travaille les contrastes entre mélodie et bruit, distorsion électro (Dumb, Hammering in My Head) et harmonie pop (When I Grow Up, I Think I’m Paranoid qui cite les Beach Boys), ballades (Medication, You Look So Fine) et riffs énervés, avec toujours ce goût pour l’étrange, cette production impeccable et cette recherche de la chanson pop parfaite et les conjugaisons futures. Entre ses guitares post-grunge, ses expérimentations noise, la voix déformée et le charisme hors-norme de Shirley Manson, Garbage parvient en douze morceaux à parfaire son génome.
