Sans être conçu comme un double album et pourtant impossible à séparer en deux opus individuels, Use Your Illusion offre l’exemple parfait d’un groupe soudainement célèbre laissant libre cours à ses ambitions. Sa réalisation s’étalant sur près de trois ans, les guitaristes Slash et Izzy Stradlin essayent de ramener le groupe vers ses racines hard-rock, tandis que le chanteur Axl Rose entend offrir un cocktail de Queen et d’Elton John. On aurait pu concevoir que ces aspirations différentes se soient vu attribuer chacune un disque, mais elles ont en fait été secouées dans un shaker. Si Use Your Illusion I est plus hard-rock que le II, ce n’est que pure coïncidence. Dans l’ensemble, le disque I tape plus fort que le II, même si l’on y trouve pas mal de remplissage, et on a du mal à repérer les moments forts au milieu d’une production somme toute assez pompeuse.
