Entendre pour la première fois des enregistrements totalement inédits de Bird, c’est un peu comme retrouver des pages supplémentaires de la Bible du jazz… Ce double album qui parait durant l’été 2016 réunit donc 58 pistes studio jamais entendues du saxophoniste mythique ! Cet ouvrage unique est le travail de l’éminent historien du jazz Phil Schaap, expert émérite ès ornithologie. « Ces prises inédites sont des blockbusters, pour Schaap. Elles livrent des improvisations de Bird sans précédent dans d’excellente conditions d’enregistrement. » En s’étendant sur les années 1949-1952, Unheard Bird: The Unissued Takes révèle l’intemporel maître du saxo alto qu’est Charlie Parker au sommet de la maturité de ses talents prodigieux. Pour les labels Clef et Mercury (Verve n'existait pas encore de son vivant), on l’entend donc ici avec plusieurs formations : avec Machito et son Afro-Cuban Orchestra (janvier1949), en septet (mai 1949), en quintet (mai 1949), en quartet avec l’orchestre de Jimmy Carroll (novembre 1949), à nouveau en quartet (avril 1950), avec le quintet de Dizzy Gillepsie (juin 1950), avec le quintet de Gillepsie encore et Thelonious Monk (juin 1950), en sextet (mars 1951), en septet (janvier 1952) et avec son propre orchestre (mars 1952). Proposant de nombreuses prises alternatives, faux départs et autres discussions de studio, ce genre de publication est avant tout destiné aux fanatiques de Parker. Ces multiples prises, souvent vraiment différentes, montrent aussi que derrière le mythe il y avait un homme, vulnérable comme tous les autres, génial soit-il. Un artiste cherchant au fil des séances à livrer l’enregistrement le plus harmonieux et parfait possible.
