Sideman de son père Willie mais aussi de Neil Young, Lukas Nelson compare parfois le son roots de son groupe, Promise of the Real, à celui de The Band. « Ils ont soutenu tellement d’artistes incroyables durant leur carrière, mais étaient aussi concentrés sur leur propre musique » On entend effectivement l’influence de la formation de Robbie Robertson sur Out In LA, qui promet les raccourcis d’un groupe de jam avant que n’éclate un solo de guitare à la Robbie Robertson justement. Lukas Nelson ne se soucie pas des frontières entre les genres, de la jangle-pop de Bad Case, à la douceur façon Hollies sur Where Does Love Go, en passant par le boogie-rock sudiste de Something Real, et la lumière tropicale de Stars Made of You. Les mentors du chanteur font également leur apparition – Willie et sa guitare bien-aimée, (surnommée Trigger), pour Mystery, ainsi que Young jouant de l’harmonium sur une version acoustique de Turn Off The News (Build A Garden).
