Ann Arbor à deux jets de pierre de Detroit. De là décolle l’aventure Stooges. Une cité industrielle ne peut qu'enfanter un rock agressif comme une machinerie d'usine. La première secousse sismique de ces Stooges qui parait durant l’été 1969 sera donc la bande originale des Temps Modernes et de la révolte qu'elle ne peut que susciter. Armées de pédales wah-wah et de fuzz déglinguées, les guitares de Ron Asheton tranchent dans le gras, la rythmique préhistorique de Scott Asheton et Dave Alexander martèle et le reptile Caruso ne peut qu'appeler à la rébellion. Le conflit vietnamien s'enlise, la jeunesse américaine s’emmerde (No Fun à tous les étages) et l'Iguane et ses Crétin se vautrent dans un génial manifeste nihiliste, sorte de garage rock chamanique porté par les hymnes I Wanna Be Your Dog, 1969 et No Fun. Ce premier uppercut des Stooges d’Iggy Pop est produit par l’ex-Velvet Underground John Cale. Un disque qui ose même quelques expériences chimiques comme les dix minutes de We Will Fall emmêlées dans la viole de John Cale. Et dire que l’épisode suivant sera bien plus apocalyptique… A noter que cette copieuse Deluxe Edition comprend le mix d'origine signé Iggy et Jac Holzman, patron d'Elektra Records, ainsi que celui de John Cale qui avait été rejeté à la sortie du disque, mais aussi diverses versions alternatives. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
