A leur sujet, on évoque les Breeders, les Smashing Pumpkins, Dinosaur Jr., Noel Gallagher d’Oasis, et toute la Brit-pop scene de l’époque. Pourtant, les millions de disques vendus, et les concerts sur diverses scènes européennes, américaines, ou japonaises, ne s’expliquent pas uniquement dans la capacité du trio à la copie-carbone.
De même, on a souvent fustigé l’incapacité de Feeder a proposer un album original. Si c’est exact, c’est que le groupe déploie sa plus grande vertu à offrir des singles, ces moments d’éternité de trois minutes, qui intriguent, excitent, ou émeuvent. Cela tombe bien : The Singles est une compilation (alimentée par les cinq premiers albums) de vingt chansons (trois inédits se sont glissés dans le lot, produits par Stephen Street, qu’on a connu derrière les Smiths), mélodies qui ont, pour la plupart, occupé durablement les charts britanniques, grâce à leur caractère punchy, et leurs refrains addictifs.
Présentés malheureusement sans cohérence chronologique, ces refrains proposent toutefois un état des lieux tout à fait satisfaisant, pour un groupe qui a su survivre à la disparition tragique de son batteur, et qui, sans prétention, s’attache depuis près de quinze ans, à faire plaisir, et à se faire plaisir. The Singles, ou de bonnes nouvelles de la seconde division.
