Ben Stiller avait déjà fait appel à Theodore Shapiro pour la musique du film parodique et délirant Tonnerre sous les tropiques (2008). Il avait certainement dû être satisfait, étant donné qu'il l'a rappelé en 2013 pour prendre en charge la bande originale de La Vie rêvée de Walter Mitty (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty en version originale).
Cette fois, le propos est plus fin et Theodore Shapiro s'est parfaitement adapté à la nouvelle donne. Tout d'abord, il s'est assuré la collaboration du guitariste de folk suédois José Gonzalez pour varier ses possibilités, puis il a surtout fait preuve d'une grande fantaisie pour transcrire les climats variés du film.
En proie à d'intenses fantasmes, le héros du film vit des aventure imaginaires que Theodore Shapiro se fait un plaisir de mettre en musique. Il fait appel à des orchestrations tonitruantes dignes des blockbusters d'action pour « Shark Attack » ou « Building Rescue ». Il se fait beaucoup plus léger pour « Dangling Piano », dont la gaieté symbolise la fantaisie du personnage.
Avec ses sonorités de balalaïka, « Arctic Fantasy », évoque une Russie de carte postale, peu en rapport avec la réalité. « Eyjafjallajökul », et son imprononçable nom islandais, est aussi l'occasion d'un morceau qui n'inspire pas la tristesse avec son violon cinglant comme les vents glacés de l'hémisphère nord. Reflet d'un film qu'elle accompagne parfaitement, la bande originale de La Vie rêvée de Walter Mitty est un plaisant divertissement qu'il serait tout de même malaisé d'apprécier en dehors de son contexte.
