Hommage aux grandes figures de la Confédération et à un certain art de vivre, cet album développe une imagerie mythique et conceptuelle autour de figures marquantes de l’histoire du Sud des Etats-Unis comme Robert E. Lee, Jessie James ou Stephen Austin incarnant le Sud et un certain caractère suranné de son histoire. Page d’histoire sous forme d’album rock, The Last Rebel représente une forme de quintessence syncrétique de la musique de Lynyrd Skynyrd.
