Donny Osmond's solo career was derived almost wholly from the rabid response that greeted his one contribution to his brothers' eponymous debut album -- radio was first to bend to the demand of the fan club, but the record label swiftly followed and, when "Sweet and Innocent" proved a major hit, MGM had no compunction about packaging it up once again, as the lead track on Donny's own LP. The Donny Osmond Album is exactly what you would expect it to be, a collection of lightweight pop confections that may not play so mercilessly on the singer's age as brother Jimmy's solo career was destined to (probably because Donny's voice was so much better), but was a finely tuned commercial beast regardless. "Hey Little Girl," "I'm Your Puppet," and a very spirited version of "Wake Up Little Susie" all highlight the singer's youthful innocence and energies, and if " Lollipops, Lace and Lipstick" does mark a musical nadir of sorts, it's still infectious enough that you'll be singing along regardless. Unlike the Osmonds' own albums, there is little sense of artistry here; it is hard to escape the feeling that songs were selected and arrangements recorded long before Donny turned up to sing his way through them. But it's still an enjoyable platter, and one that has withstood the test of time a lot better than many albums of its ilk.
