L'essentiel des enregistrements studio de Lester Young réunis par Verve ont été réalisés dans la dernière décennie de sa vie (1949-1959) qui l'a vu décliner physiquement (sa grave dépression le faisait beaucoup boire) et musicalement sans perdre cependant ses capacités impressionnantes d'improvisateur qui nous laissent de cette période des solos à la fois magnifiques et révélateurs de sa lassitude de vivre. On le retrouve ici en trio avec Nat Cole et Buddy Rich (1946), puis dans des quatuors, quintettes et sextets avec les trompettistes Jesse Drakes, Harry Edison et Roy Eldridge, le tromboniste Vic Dickenson et les pianistes Hank Jones, John Lewis et Teddy Wilson pour se terminer par Paris en 1959, sa dernière session avant sa disparition.
