Le huitième album de Death Cab For Cutie, Kintsugi, soulignait les multiples fractures du groupe. Le guitariste Chris Walla quittait la compagnie et le mariage de Ben Gibbard s’effondrait. Deux divisions qui ont généré une atmosphère pesante et négative sur la bande, menant à un album certes intéressant mais assez noir. Trois ans après, la déprime semble enfin terminée. Thank You for Today présente plusieurs aspects réjouissants et réunit les coéquipiers de longue date : Ben Gibbard, Nick Harmer, Jason McGerr et deux partenaires de studio Dave Depper et Zac Rae. Comme pour Kintsugi, l’album est produit et mixé par le talentueux Rich Costey, connu pour ses productions de Muse, Franz Ferdinand et Fiona Apple. Un background solide qui se ressent dès la première écoute.
La phase grisâtre de Death Cab For Cutie semble terminée. Place à l’optimisme dans une rébellion tranquille. Avec I Dreamt We Spoke Again, le groupe ouvre par un jeu de distorsions qui recouvrent la voix de Gibbard dans un style rétro. Puis vient sûrement le titre le plus représentatif du nouvel état d’esprit de la bande. Gold Rush (qui pourrait faire penser au Screamadelica de Primal Scream), emprunte en fait sa ligne mélodique au Mind Train de Yoko Ono. Plus pop, entraînant et aéré, Death Cab For Cutie ne brise pas les éléments comme sur Kintsugi. C’est par un grand travail de modélisation, de reconstruction à partir de leur vécu et de leurs inspirations que les membres du groupe atteignent cette ambiance rock rétro et contemporaine à la fois. © Anna Coluthe
