En 2018, le challenge pour Lil Wayne était énorme : parvenir à donner une suite à sa série d’albums Tha Carter, démarrée quatorze ans plus tôt. Avec Tha Carter V, il réussissait à produire un équilibre entre son attrait pour les sonorités pop (sur les apaisés Famous ou Mess) et son âpreté, illustrée notamment par le single ravageur Uproar, produit Swizz Beatz, et à convoquer une brochette de featurings dignes de son statut, composée de Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj ou encore Travis Scott. Si la critique fut divisée, elle ne doit pas oublier que le natif de La Nouvelle-Orléans respectait à la lettre son évolution musicale des dix dernières années. Quitte à déplaire. Cette édition deluxe a une particularité : tous les inédits sont placés au début de la tracklist. C’est simple. Ils sont au nombre de neuf, et, disons-le tout de suite, dans un optique bien plus trap et sombre que l’album originel. Il ne s’agit pas d’ajouter de la couleur à Tha Carter V ou d’approfondir sa direction sonore, mais d’envoyer des bangers pour satisfaire l’auditeur. Et ça marche. On trouve notamment More to the Story, en featuring avec Raekwon, trap au possible, et ces synthés menaçants, certainement le titre le plus notable parmi ces nouveautés. Et même si Lost et ses envolées de cordes et de piano rappelle que Lil Wayne est bien le boss historique de la pop-trap, l’aspect brut de sa musique se ressent de l’ouverture Life of Mr. Carter (dans laquelle il règle une volée de comptes) à Hasta La Vista. Malgré quelques déceptions comme Siri, en featuring avec 2 Chainz, le rappeur nous rappelle au bon souvenir de sa patte teintée de samples vocaux répétés frénétiquement à l’infini, comme sur In This House (en featuring avec Gucci Mane, une énième légende sur le projet). En 2018, le challenge pour Lil Wayne était énorme : parvenir à donner une suite à sa série d’albums Tha Carter, démarrée quatorze ans plus tôt. Avec Tha Carter V, il réussissait à produire un équilibre entre son attrait pour les sonorités pop (sur les apaisés Famous ou Mess) et son âpreté, illustrée notamment par le single ravageur Uproar, produit Swizz Beatz, et à convoquer une brochette de featurings dignes de son statut, composée de Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj ou encore Travis Scott. Si la critique fut divisée, elle ne doit pas oublier que le natif de La Nouvelle-Orléans respectait à la lettre son évolution musicale des dix dernières années. Quitte à déplaire. Cette édition deluxe a une particularité : tous les inédits sont placés au début de la tracklist. C’est simple. Ils sont au nombre de neuf, et, disons-le tout de suite, dans un optique bien plus trap et sombre que l’album originel. Il ne s’agit pas d’ajouter de la couleur à Tha Carter V ou d’approfondir sa direction sonore, mais d’envoyer des bangers pour satisfaire l’auditeur. Et ça marche. On trouve notamment More to the Story, en featuring avec Raekwon, trap au possible, et ces synthés menaçants, certainement le titre le plus notable parmi ces nouveautés. Et même si Lost et ses envolées de cordes et de piano rappelle que Lil Wayne est bien le boss historique de la pop-trap, l’aspect brut de sa musique se ressent de l’ouverture Life of Mr. Carter (dans laquelle il règle une volée de comptes) à Hasta La Vista. Malgré quelques déceptions comme Siri, en featuring avec 2 Chainz, le rappeur nous rappelle au bon souvenir de sa patte teintée de samples vocaux répétés frénétiquement à l’infini, comme sur In This House (en featuring avec Gucci Mane, une énième légende sur le projet).
