Chanteur de soul amateur ayant connu quelques succès au milieu des années 1970, Billy Ocean effectue une percée dans les classements britanniques et américains avec l’album Suddenly (1984).
Le simple « Carribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run) » fait en effet un carton dès sa sortie en 1984, se classant n° 1 aux Etats-Unis et n° 6 en Grande-Bretagne. Le très funky « Loverboy » suit ses traces l’année suivante, tandis que le slow « Suddenly » marque également les esprits.
L’album compte aussi, dans ce même esprit, « The Long and Winding Road », où « Dancefloor », « Syncopation » ou « If I Should Lose You », beaucoup plus marqués par les rythmiques R&B de synthétiseurs. Vendu à deux millions d’exemplaires, le disque sera imité par ses suivants, Love Zone (1986) et Tear Down These Walls (1988), avant de voir la notoriété de Billy Ocean tomber dans les oubliettes durant une vingtaine d’année.
