The debut full-length from Fresno's Rademacher draws favorable comparisons with indie rock icons, and Central Valley forebears Pavement and Grandaddy without actually sounding like either. The comparisons hold up, though, because Rademacher's adventurous approach hews to similar anything-goes aesthetics. Like any indie rock worthy of the title, Malcolm Sosa's songs tend to go left where traditional rock turns right, with emblematic cuts like "Machines" and its mix of spiky Gang of Four guitars and swelling Wolf Parade choruses using shifting time sigs, stop/start tempos, shards of staccato guitar or percussive piano comping as counterweights to the pop hooks, playful organs, and singalong choruses. Opening cut "Arkansas" establishes that template impressively, opening with 60 seconds of quiet buzz and disembodied voices before evolving into ecstatic rhythmic surges, choir-like harmonies, and Sosa's bordering-on-hysteria vocals. These songs suggest that Rademacher has been listening to plenty of Arcade Fire and the Talking Heads in the tour van; Sosa even sings like an amalgamation of Win Butler and David Byrne, with some occasional Jeff Magnum thrown in for added tension. The back half of the record is quieter and more straightforward, reminiscent of the melancholic indie pop of Earlimart, whose Aaron Espinoza -- a Fresno refugee -- served as engineer for the record and hosted its recording in his Eagle Rock, CA studio. One arena where it's easier to invoke the Pavement or Grandaddy influences is Sosa's half-playful/half-wistful narratives, which are anchored firmly in Fresno and recall both the smart-aleck suburban-slacker vibe and desperate escapism that Stephen Malkmus and Jason Lytle respectively chiseled into the rock lexicon. Stunts doesn't quite reach Pavement's ironic detachment, Grandaddy's orchestral melancholy, or the lofty heights of its other iconic influences, but the mash-up has resulted in something fresh and very promising.
