Presque quarante ans après, la pochette de Street Songs fait sourire : Rick James le macho mégalo saucissonné dans une combinaison de cuir noire, chaussé de santiags vernies rouges fluo piquées au Chat botté, s’appuie contre le réverbère d’une rue sombre de New York, sa basse Rickenbacker blanche en bandoulière… Un sommet kitsch de l’exubérance en plastique des 80's. Mais surtout, la version 81 des tables de la loi funk de Sly Stone, George Clinton et James Brown. La rythmique louche vers des sonorités new wave, les guitares abordent les rives du metal, Street Songs est l’anti-Celebration de Kool & The Gang et de Fantasy d’Earth, Wind & Fire ! New funk, naked funk, punk funk, toutes les étiquettes y passent. Pour Motown, Street Songs est surtout un don (financier) du ciel. Paroles, musique, production, arrangements, Rick James est l’artiste complet ! Rue, dope, violences policières, ghetto et sexe, tous les thèmes qu’il aborde nourriront la musique noire américaine des années à venir, le gangsta rap en tête. Ayant atteint le sommet avec ce cinquième album studio porté par le tubesque Super Freak (que MC Hammer samplera neuf ans plus tard sur son fameux U Can’t Touch This), le funkster destroy peut commencer sa descente aux enfers qui se terminera le 6 août 2004, à son domicile de Los Angeles, emporté par une overdose à 56 ans.
