Norwegian songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jarle Bernhoft follows up his Grammy-nominated LP Islander with a five-song EP of high-quality retro soul and funk that focuses rightly on the singer's voice. (The sixth track, "Shout It Out," is brief field recording.) With his meaty mid-range and classic R&B falsetto (for the latter, don't miss "Patience Revisited"), it may be hard to believe he got his start in indie rock bands before a gradual style transition as a solo artist. The surprising lead track, "Stop/Shutup," can pass for authentic, mid-'70s disco. It's joined by songs like "Writing on the Wall" -- a funk outing worthy of Rufus -- and the neo-soul ballad "Falter."
