Cet album est celui des retours. Avec Soul ‘69, Aretha Franklin valide en effet le souvenir de ce sud inventé, qui a présidé aux tous premiers mois de son existence, cette Memphis (Tennessee) qui la marque de manière durable, même si elle est plutôt la fille de la grande ville industrielle (Detroit). Retour également vers les premières amours que voulut lui imposer son premier label – Columbia Records – ce jazz, qui n’offre en fait que la déclinaison policée, et urbaine, de la musique noire qui nourrit la chanteuse (blues, et gospel). Ainsi, pour cet album sans tubes, mais non sans qualités, elle décide de s’entourer, outre l’habituelle brigade du producteur Jerry Wexler (du saxophone de King Curtis à la guitare de Jimmy Johnson, en passant par le claviériste Spooner Oldham, on dira : ce qu’on fait de mieux en matière de soul sudiste), de quelques musiciens de sessions triés sur le volet.



Ainsi se succèdent le guitariste délicat Kenny Burrell, le futur Weather Report Joe Zawinul, la basse virtuose de Ron Carter, ou le saxophoniste et flûtiste David « Fathead » Newman, qu’on a connu compagnon attentif du parrain de la soul, Ray Charles. La sélection de chansons, toujours solide, inclut l’inévitable emprunt au répertoire de Sam Cooke (« Bring It On Home To Me »), une ponction faite aux Miracles de Smokey Robinson (« The Tracks of My Tears »), ainsi que la superbe interprétation du « River’s Invitation » de Percy Mayfield. Aretha Franklin chante l’ensemble avec détermination et conviction, et sans la pression des albums précédents. Soul ’69 consacre en effet son entrée dans sa période classique, loin des perturbations éruptives du début, mais toujours avec grande classe. Même si « Gentle on My Mind » et « Tracks of My Tears », choisis comme singles, ne bénéficieront que d’une carrière modeste dans les classements, l’album atteindra la première position des classements de vente d’albums de musique noire.
