Prolific bassist Stephan Crump continues to experiment with different settings and modes on his latest release, 2024's Slow Water, a blend of chamber piece and introspective jazz. Recorded with a sextet which includes two string players, violinist Yuniya Edi Kwon and viola player Joanna Mattrey, two horns, trumpeter Kenny Warren and Jacob Garchik, plus vibraphonist Patricia Brennan, the album works as a 67-minute suite which seamlessly alternates between Crump's compositions and group improvisations. The album's thematic motif was inspired by "Water Always Wins", a book by science journalist Erica Gies about mankind's relationship to water, its movement and its power.
The mysterious opening improvisation "Sound (Brackish)" sets the tone for the record, carefully exploring the world we're about to enter and mapping out the territory with impressionistic strokes. Its atmospheric quality runs through the entire album, ranging from the subtle, almost ambient-like sounds on "Pneumatophore" to the hauntingly surreal "Strata" or the intensely creepy "Hyporheic", always suggesting an unknown entity and approaching it with curiosity and awe. Crump's compositions tend to have fuller arrangements and more clearly stated ideas than the improv pieces – witness the yearning strings of "Mire", the dramatic "Euphotic", the lush beauty of "Bogged" or the strange dance the musicians enter on "Dusk Critters" – but at the same time, they continue the interludes' mystical qualities with a thematically appropriate, slowly unwinding flow. The album is less about individual contributions and solo performances – it is more interested in exploring moods and inspiring visuals, and as such, it actually works as a poetic soundtrack companion to Gies' non-fiction book, a score to the quiet presence of life's most essential foundation.
