Les cramés Flaming Lips ressortent les cartons et, avec, assemblent un collage remastérisé intitulé Scratching the Door, sorte d'album de famille des premiers jours. Dedans, on y trouve des enregistrements de 1985 à 1989 alors qu'ils étaient sous leur formation originale : Wayne Coyne à la guitare, son frère au micro, Michael Ivins à la basse et Dave Kotska à la batterie. L'opus des premiers ébats comprend leur premier EP autoproduit, des démos et une version largement destroy de Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere des Who. Les quinquagénaires d'aujourd'hui avaient à peine 20 ans mais leur son déjà cabossé – un postpunk brut aux guitares sales et débraillées, basse tonitruante (Flaming Lips Theme Song) rehaussées par des digressions d'harmonica (Handsome Johnny) – plus que leurs convulsions psychédéliques, repeignait déjà les murs d'Oklahoma City. En juin 2018 suivra Seeing The Unseeable: The Complete Studio Recordings of the Flaming Lips 1986-1990 : une compilation de leurs premiers albums, période Restless Records, avant leur signature chez Warner.
