Tonight’s The Night fait partie des grands disques anthracites de l’histoire du rock’n’roll. En six mois, Neil Young a perdu deux proches, morts d'overdose : son guitariste Danny Whitten et son roadie Bruce Berry. Logique que l’album qu’il enregistrera dans la foulée en août et septembre 1973 (mais qui ne paraîtra qu’en juin 1975, après On the Beach) soit d’une rare noirceur… Le trip introspectif de Tonight’s the Night se nourrit de ces drames personnels qu’il mêle à l’ambiance oppressante qui règne alors en Amérique. Violences urbaines, consommation croissante de drogue, guerre du Vietnam et utopie hippie chahutée alimentent sa partition sombre mais sublime et poignante. Même l’instrumentarium déballé sur Tonight’s the Night est chancelant, entre un piano vacillant et une pedal steel à l’économie. Du dépouillé pour mieux souligner la beauté des mélodies comme sur les bouleversantes ballades Tired Eyes, New Mama et Borrowed Tune…
Les 20, 21 et 22 septembre 1973, Neil Young et ses musiciens, baptisés les Santa Monica Flyers (en fait, Ben Keith à la pedal steel, Nils Lofgren à la guitare et au piano, Billy Talbot à la basse et Ralph Molina à la batterie), montent sur la scène du Roxy, un tout nouveau club de Los Angeles sur West Hollywood. Dans leurs mains, ce nouveau répertoire qui sent la mort et le souffre mais dont les versions qu’ils livrent ici au public californien sont empreintes d’une force émotive, d’une réelle chaleur et parfois même d’une joie sincère et communicative logiquement absente sur les versions studio. Là réside la magie de cette archive ressuscitée et restaurée.
