Fondé en 2003 à Liverpool, il aura fallu attendre quatre ans pour que The Wombats livre ce premier album en Angleterre et en Europe. Entre temps, le groupe avait sorti exclusivement au Japon un premier opus baptisé Girls, Boys and Marsupials.
Emmené par le chanteur et guitariste Matthew Murphy, jeune homme hirsute à la voix proche de Robert Smith (The Cure), The Wombats est un groupe représentatif de la jeunesse britannique. Avec une bonne dose d’humour et d’ironie, le trio donne envie de faire la fête grâce à des singles britpop d’une efficacité redoutable (« Backfire at the Disco », « Let’s Dance to Joy Division », « Lost in the Post », « Kill the Director »).
Nourri dans les années 1980 à la new wave et au post punk, The Wombats a digéré toutes ces influences pour en faire une mixture moderne et entraînante. A Guide to Lcve, Loss & Desperation est l'un des tout meilleurs albums de rock alternatif que l’Angleterre a produit en 2007.
