In addition to continuing the traditional role and sound of the Native American flute, Mark Holland also incorporates other styles and sounds into the mix. The recordings Holland has made with Autumn's Child, which features acoustic guitarist Peter Mayer, are excellent examples of his skills at synthesis. As this album's title indicates, there are progressive elements here, such as the jazzy groove and angular chord patterns of "Good Things Happen When It Rains" and "Dream Sequence," with its heavy synth textures and ambient suggestions.
Yet there is plenty of Native American flavor to appease fans of Holland's more traditional material. "Sojourner's End," for example, has Holland's soothing flute floating over a low rumbling of tom-toms. "Narrow Path" is a duet between flute and thumb piano that is delicate and melodious. But whether pushing the world music envelope, or calming listeners with his gentle, floating woodwind lines, Holland and Autumn's Child have made an interesting, tranquil, and always evocative recording in PROGRESSIVE WORLD.
