Retour sensationnel au style de l’époque de Violator, Playing the Angel, sorti en 2005, est sans doute la production la plus aboutie de Depeche Mode depuis leur album plébiscité de 1990. Le groupe n’est pas là pour rigoler : le premier morceau, "A Pain That I'm Used To" s’ouvre sur des bruits discordants et menaçants et passe à une mélodie sombre tout en progression. Le côté plus mélodieux de Depeche Mode est pourtant bien représenté, comme le révèlent "John the Revelator" et "Precious", avec sa mélodie appuyée et chargée d’émotion. Fruit d’un groupe de longue date qui se concentre sur ce qu’il fait de mieux, sans complexe et sans faire dans le répétitif, Playing the Angel est un nouvel album bienvenu au rang des meilleurs disques de Depeche Mode.
